Nine Elder Care Statistics Everyone Repeats That Aren’t True

Why this list exists

Every article on this site is supposed to trace its numbers to a real source. Doing that consistently means running into the same problem over and over: a statistic gets repeated across dozens of caregiving websites, sounds authoritative because everyone agrees on it, and turns out to have no defensible source behind it, or to be quietly misquoting one. This is a list of nine such statistics, found while researching other articles on this site, kept in one place because scattering the corrections across nine different pages made the pattern harder to see.

One of these was, until recently, wrong on this site’s own homepage. I am including it anyway. A site that only points at other people’s mistakes while quietly fixing its own is not being honest about how this happens.

Two kinds of problem show up below, and they are not the same. Some of these numbers trace to a real study that has been misquoted, taken out of context, or superseded by better research. Others simply have no traceable source at all, despite appearing everywhere with total confidence. Both are worth knowing, but they call for different responses: the first group has a correct number to use instead, the second does not.

1. “Tai chi reduces falls by 43 percent”

The real figure, from the Cochrane review most sites are implicitly citing, is 19 percent, and it is rated low-certainty evidence, not the strong randomized-trial evidence the 43 percent figure implies. A separate 2020 update using more recent studies puts it closer to 23 percent. Neither number is 43, and neither carries the certainty level usually attached to it.

This is the one I mentioned above. It sat on this site’s own homepage, mislabeled, until this project caught and corrected it. The correction is public and dated. Being caught out by your own standard is a normal part of holding one.

2. “1 in 5 older Americans is a victim of financial fraud”

The best peer-reviewed estimate, a meta-analysis pooling 12 studies and nearly 42,000 people, puts the one-year figure at roughly 1 in 18, not 1 in 5. The 1-in-5 figure traces to a 2010 industry survey and has outpaced the more careful research by a wide margin in how often it gets repeated.

This does not mean elder financial exploitation is rare. It means the real number, roughly 1 in 18 per year, is itself serious enough that inflating it to 1 in 5 is unnecessary and, once someone checks the source, damages trust in every other number on the same page. 3. “60 percent of people with dementia will wander”

The actual research reports a range, 15 to 60 percent, depending heavily on how a study defines wandering. Flattening that range into a single confident 60 percent has been directly criticized in the academic literature as an example of popular discourse treating dementia and wandering as more simply linked than the evidence supports.

The range itself is still useful information. It just is not one number, and presenting it as one number implies a precision the underlying studies do not have. My article on why people with dementia wander goes through the range and what actually predicts it.

4. “80 percent of falls happen in the bathroom, at the toilet”

This one is a straightforward misreading. The actual CDC figure states that 81.1 percent of bathroom injuries are caused by falls. That is a statement about what causes injuries once someone is already hurt in a bathroom, not a statement about where most falls in general happen. The two sentences sound almost identical and mean different things.

5. “Half of people with dementia who go missing die within 24 hours”

This traces to a 1995 study of 42 cases, and those 42 cases were specifically the ones where search-and-rescue teams got called in after local police searches had already failed, which is by definition the worst subset of outcomes available. A much larger dataset, over a thousand dementia-related search cases, puts the real 24-hour fatality figure at roughly 25 percent, not 50.

Twenty-five percent is still a serious number and still a reason to move fast if someone goes missing. It is also half of what gets quoted, and the difference matters for how frightened a family should be at hour twenty rather than hour twenty-three.

6. “$2.9 billion is lost to elder financial abuse every year”

This figure, from a 2011 industry study, was built by scanning news coverage, finding 389 distinct articles about elder financial abuse, and extrapolating a national dollar total from that count. Counting newspaper stories about a problem is not the same as measuring the problem, and one of the study’s own authors later acknowledged as much publicly.

7. “$27 billion was stolen from older adults last year”

This newer figure has largely replaced the $2.9 billion number in recent coverage, and it has a version of the same underlying problem. It comes from a federal analysis of bank suspicious-activity reports, and it is a total of reported suspicious activity, not a confirmed theft total. The agency that published it says directly that the number may be inflated by attempted transactions, duplicate reports, and transfers between a person’s own accounts. It gets repeated as a losses figure anyway.

8. “A second stair handrail cuts falls by 13 percent”

This is the first of two figures on this list that fall into the second category: not misquoted, simply untraceable. This exact number, and its close companion claiming high-contrast stair edging reduces missteps by 25 percent, appear together across a large number of home-modification websites with no citation attached, and no study producing either figure turned up during research for this site’s own stair safety coverage.

To be clear about what this does and does not mean: a second handrail and better stair visibility are still reasonable things to install. The problem is not the advice. The problem is the specific percentage attached to it, which appears to have no real study behind it and simply gets copied from one site to the next.

9. “Stove auto-shutoff devices prevent 100 percent of unattended cooking fires”

This is manufacturer marketing language rather than an independent research finding, and a claim of 100 percent prevention for any safety device should be treated with suspicion on its face. The National Fire Protection Association’s own data is observational rather than a controlled study, and it does not support a blanket 100 percent figure. These devices may well reduce risk meaningfully. That is a different claim from preventing all of it, and the difference is exactly the kind of thing that gets lost when a marketing number is repeated as a research finding.

How to spot a suspect statistic yourself

A few patterns showed up repeatedly while tracking these nine down, and they are worth knowing as general warning signs rather than just facts about these specific numbers.

The number is suspiciously round or suspiciously precise with no range attached. Real research on human behavior and health almost always produces a range or a confidence interval, not a single clean figure. A flat “60 percent” with no range is often a range that got rounded away by the tenth site that repeated it.

Every site cites the statistic but none link to a study. If ten articles all state the same number and none of them link to where it came from, that is not ten independent confirmations. It is one uncredited source copied nine times.

The source is a survey commissioned by a company that sells a related product. This does not automatically make a figure wrong, but it is a reason to look for independent confirmation before repeating it as settled fact.

A percentage claims to prevent something completely. Zero and 100 percent are both rare, honest results in real research. A device or intervention claiming total prevention of anything is usually describing its marketing copy rather than a study.

Frequently asked questions

Does this mean I shouldn’t trust statistics about caregiving and aging at all?

No. It means worth checking where a specific number came from before treating it as settled, the same way you would for any other important decision. Plenty of well-sourced, carefully reported statistics exist in this space. The problem is that they get mixed in with unsourced ones that sound equally confident, and most readers have no easy way to tell them apart.

How does this site verify the statistics it publishes?

Every specific figure is traced to a named, checkable primary source before it goes in an article, and where a figure cannot be traced, it gets left out rather than repeated because everyone else uses it. When two credible sources disagree, both get reported rather than picking the more convenient one. This list exists because that process keeps turning up numbers that do not hold up, and it seemed more useful to publish the pattern than to quietly fix nine separate pages.

Why was a wrong statistic on this site’s own homepage?

The tai chi figure was mislabeled during an earlier build of the site and caught during a later review. It has been corrected and the correction is dated. Including that mistake in this list rather than leaving it out was a deliberate choice: a site that only calls out other people’s errors while hiding its own is not actually holding a standard, just performing one.
